If you don't need a certain document anymore, you should do something more than deleting it, because erased information can be recovered. If you want to make sure that your files will stay deleted, you should shred them with Secure Data Eraser. This lightweight application is capable of overwriting data multiple times, until there is nothing left to recover. Its functionality is straightforward and easy to understand and it won't take too long to shred large amounts of data.

Secure Data Eraser is free to try with some limitations. It works on many Windows platforms, from Windows NT up to Windows 7. Installing the application is a quick operation, which does not involve any complex configurations.

The application allows you to choose between three operations when you launch it. You can decide to shred individual files or folders, wipe an entire disk or flash memory device or wipe the free space on your hard drive. Secure Data Eraser guides you through each procedure with step-by-step instructions, just like a wizard. All wiping operations are prepared in a similar manner, without any difficulties.

Once you target a file, folder or drive, you may proceed to the next step and select a shredding method. The application supports a good number of shredding algorithms. You can choose simple and fast algorithms that will make a single pass when erasing data or you can choose complex algorithms, which can make up to 35 passes. Secure Data Eraser will display your targeted data one last time, before it starts wiping.

It should go without saying that you have to be careful what data or drives you wipe, because you won't be able to recover the data. Once a file has been shredded, the physical information on the disk is destroyed and no one can recover it, regardless of what applications they use.

Pros

You can shred specific files or folders, wipe entire drives or wipe the free disk space. The application provides clear instructions for each procedure. It comes with multiple shredding algorithms, which can make up to 35 passes when wiping files.

Cons

You can't wipe entire partitions or the free disk space while using the trial version and you will encounter nag screens. When Secure Data Eraser is done shredding your files, it will be as if the data never existed.
